The consortium consists of partners from in total 5 European countries and comprises one of the world leader manufacturer of photonics systems, two SMEs and four universities. Among the SMEs is the international leading manufacturer of InP-based long-wavelength (i.e up to ~2 µm) and tunable VCSELs. The strength of the consortium is that it has partners with expertise in design, fabrication and characterision of GaSb-based semiconductor lasers, particularly VCSELs, as well as in the application of tunable laser diodes (VCSELs) in photonic sensors and sensing systems. The complementarity within the NEMIS consortium will help to evaluate and optimise designs and fabrication methods, and to assess advantages and disadvantages of the new devices over the existing solutions. Nearly all partners have considerable experience with research on laser diodes and their applications and have been active previously in European projects on optical components. Among these projects were several projects addressing the development of GaSb-based lasers, tunable laser diodes and/or the application of these devices.
